Some believed the berry increased sperm production and sex drive in men. saw palmetto also inhibits the actions of growth factors and inflammatory substances that may contribute to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Double-blind clinical trials have proven that 320 mg per day of the liposterolic extract of saw palmetto berries is a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of BPH. A recent review of studies, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded that saw palmetto extract was as effective as finasteride (Proscar(r)) in the treatment of BPH.3 the clinical effectiveness of saw palmetto has been shown in trials lasting six months to three years.

L-Arginine

The effect of arginine on growth hormone levels1 has interested body builders. In a controlled trial, when arginine and ornithine (500 mg of each, twice per day, five times per week) were combined with weight training, a greater decrease in body fat was obtained after only five weeks, than when the same exercise was combined with a placebo.2 In another study, however, 5 grams of arginine powder, taken orally 30 minutes prior to exercise, failed to affect growth hormone release. Arginine is also a precursor to nitric oxide, which the body uses to keep blood vessels dilated, allowing the heart to receive adequate oxygen. Researchers have begun to use arginine in people with angina and congestive heart failure.

Citrus Aurantium Powder Extract

Citrus Aurantium is to stimulate Beta-3 receptors without negatively affecting Alpha-1, Alpha-2 and Beta-2 receptors. This means that Citrus Aurantium is able to increase the metabolic rate. The unique composition of adrenergic amines in Citrus Aurantium causes the release of adrenaline and nonadrenaline - most likely in the vicinity of Beta-3 receptors sites, which are found primarily in adipose tissue and the liver. Stimulation of these Beta-3 receptors results in the breakdown of fat as well as an increase in the metabolic rate. So far, volunteers in the McGill University study who took Citrus Aurantium exhibited excellent increases in thermogenesis

The findings of a double-blind trial using 50 mg supplements of DHEA taken daily for six months suggests that DHEA may improve erectile function in some men. DHEA modulates immunity. A group of elderly men with low DHEA levels who were given 50 mg of DHEA per day for 20 weeks, experienced a significant activation of immune function.15 Postmenopausal women have also shown increased immune functioning in just three weeks when given DHEA in double-blind research. Astragalus Herb Extract

The portion of the plant used medicinally is the four- to seven-year-old dried root, collected in the spring. While over 2,000 types of astragalus exist worldwide, the Chinese version has been extensively tested, both chemically and pharmacologically. Shen Nung, the founder of Chinese herbal medicine, classified astragalus as a superior herb in his classical treatise Shen Nung Pen Tsao Ching (circa A.D. 100). Traditional Chinese Medicine used this herb for night sweats, deficiency of chi (e.g., fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite), and diarrhea. Astragalus contains numerous components, including flavonoids, polysaccharides, triterpene glycosides (e.g., astragalosides I-VII), amino acids, and trace minerals.3 Several preliminary clinical trials in China have suggested that astragalus can benefit immune function and improve survival in some people with cancer. A double-blind trial found that, in people undergoing dialysis for kidney failure, intravenous astragalus improved one facet of immune function compared to the immune function of untreated people. In preliminary trials in China, astragalus has been used after people suffer heart attacks.
